CultureSAFE
Initiated by WSH Council in 2012, the CultureSAFE programme provides an one-stop platform for organizations to embark on a safety culture building journey beyond safety infrastructure and competency that focuses on cultivating the right mindset and attitudes in everyone.
The CultureSAFE 5 steps cycle consist of:
1. Diagnostic
2. Reporting
3. Action Planning
4. Implementation
5. Review & Evaluation
The CultureSAFE Model, developed by WSH Council, is a representation of the attributes of an organizational safety culture. These attributes influence the values and safety practices of its members which can in turn shape their safety attitudes and perceptions.
The CultureSAFE Maturity Level are defined as follows:
Many organizations implemented various safety initiatives such as voluntary safety management system and behaviour-based safety but unfortunately, very few could reach progressive and exemplary levels. Some safety initiatives just disappear over time.
If the organization’s safety culture is pathological, it is likely the best customer of the WSH authority. If your safety culture is reactive, it is best to seek help and minimally implement the risk management programme. bizSAFE programme may be a good starting point to build your competency in risk management and safety management system.
If your organization has already achieved at least participative maturity, CultureSAFE programme will be a great safety cultural initiative for you.
Behaviour-Based Safety
Behaviour-based safety is a process that helps employees identify and choose a safe behaviour over an at-risk behaviour. It focuses on what people do, analyses why they do it, and then applies a research supported intervention strategy to improve what people do.
EQS pioneered the behavior-based safety approach in 2000, and through many implementations has customized and adapted it to a wider range of company cultures and industries.
EQS’s approach to implementation of behavior-based safety is based on the knowledge and know-how gained from over 1,200 previous implementations. This enables us to help our clients avoid problems and successfully handle the challenges that arise when introducing any new process.
Our experience has shown that gaining buy-in is critical if behavior-based safety is to succeed. We have also learned that the behavior-based safety process must retain certain key elements, but at the same time be tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of each location.
Our approach is based on helping you achieve buy-in, then providing consulting and skills development to a Steering Committee of site personnel to play the leading role in adapting the BAPP® technology to meet the organizational culture and needs, guiding the process at the site, and then in rolling it out. For behavior-based safety to achieve its potential, it is important that the process created be site’s safety process, not the consultant’s process.
Exemplary Safety Culture
In an exemplary safety culture, safety is truly internalized as an integral part of organization and a non-negotiable value for everyone.
Everyone takes ownership and leadership of safety. People are empowered and go beyond “the call of duty” to intervene unsafe conditions and at-risk behaviours because they care for each other. People enjoy good working relationship and team work and they have great trust and respect for leaders. The communication is open and anyone can easily approach leaders to share safety concerns.
Leaders are committed to safety and provide resources to develop competency, improve work environment, enhance safety of processes and inspire followers to build a safe and healthy workplace.
An organization with a strong safety culture typically experiences fewer at-risk behaviours and lower accident frequency rates. They are usually organizations who are highly successful in all aspects of business and excellence.
Our goal is to assist organization in achieving a higher safety culture and ultimately reach exemplary level.
